A building collapsed in the state of Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil on Friday. Rescuers search the rubble for survivors. One person has been rescued so far, officials said.

The crash happened on Friday morning on Rua Dr. Luiz Inácio de Andrade Lima in Paulista, Pernambuco.

“At 6.35 am, civil defense received a report of a building collapse in the Janga district,” the local administration said. “Eight rescue teams were sent to the site,” the statement said.

Local authorities say one person, a 65-year-old woman, has been rescued so far. Preliminary findings indicate that more people may be buried under the rubble. According to CNN Brasil, it is estimated that there may be 10 people in the ruins. The station reports that the building was officially out of use.

Paulista is approximately 17 kilometers from the state capital Recife, a coastal city of approximately 1.5 million inhabitants. The region has recently been struggling with heavy rains, Reuters reported. A state of emergency was declared in and around the city on Friday.
