The death toll from heavy rains that hit the Brazilian states of Rio de Janeiro and Espirito Santo has risen to 23, local authorities said on Sunday. In some places, over 230 liters of rain per square meter fell during the day.

On the night from Friday to Saturday, powerful storms and downpours came to parts of Brazil. According to local authorities, they contributed to the death of at least 23 people. Earlier we reported 12 deaths. In the city of Mimoso do Sul alone, located in the state of Espirito Santo, 13 people died. The disaster forced at least five thousand people to leave their homes.

Such tragedies “are intensifying with climate change,” Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva recalled in a post on the X platform.

Flooded houses, flood waters carried away cars

In the city of Mimoso do Sul in Espirito Santo state, 231.8 liters of rain per square meter fell in 24 hours. Houses were flooded and floodwaters carried away cars and a fire truck. As Leonardo Ferreira, coordinator of the municipal civil defense, explained in an interview with local media, the city was actually devastated.

On Saturday evening, rescue teams found a four-year-old child in the rubble of a house destroyed by a mudslide in the city of Petropolis, Rio de Janeiro state. At least 75 landslides were recorded in the city. The successful rescue operation lasted for over 15 hours. Although there was less rain on Saturday evening, there is still a high risk of landslides across the region.
