It is deeply problematic how Brazil is actually and rhetorically approaching the war in Ukraine, said National Security Council spokesman John Kirby. In this way, he referred to the words of Brazilian President Lula da Silva, who believes that the West is encouraging war in Ukraine, not Russia, which attacked it. The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Sergey Lavrov, appeared in Brazil and on Monday said that Moscow was “grateful to its Brazilian friends for a clear understanding of the origins of the situation.”

President Brazil Inacio Lula da Silva, during a visit to Beijing on Saturday, said that the US and Europe “should stop encouraging war and start talking about peace.”

Earlier, Lula da Silva proposed Ukraine Crimea was handed over to Russia to end the war. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kiev replied that Ukraine does not trade its territories and sees no reason to give away even an inch of Ukrainian land.

White House: Brazil parrots Russian and Chinese propaganda

John Kirby, spokesman for the National Security Council, responded to Lula’s words. “We have no objection to any country trying to bring it to an end war in Ukraine. But we find it deeply problematic how Brazil actually and rhetorically approaches the war by implying that United States and Europe are somehow uninterested in peace or that we are co-responsible for the conflict,” Kirby said during an online press briefing. “In this case, Brazil parrots Russian and Chinese propaganda without looking at the facts,” he added.

Kirby stated that the United States and Ukraine itself want a just peace. He also criticized Lula’s earlier statement about giving back Crimea.

“This is simply wrong, especially for a country that, like Brazil, voted to uphold the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity in the UN General Assembly,” he said.

Lavrov’s visit to Brazil

Commenting on the visit of the head of Russian diplomacy that began on Monday Sergei Lavrov in Brazil, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba, Kirby said he hoped that dignitaries in those countries would urge Lavrov to stop bombing Ukrainian cities in talks with Lavrov.

“We also hope that these sovereign leaders will find time in their busy schedules to meet with Ukrainian officials as well,” he added.

Lavrov himself told reporters in Brasilia on Monday during a conference with Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira that Moscow was “grateful to our Brazilian friends for clearly understanding the origins of the situation.”

According to Reuters, the Russian will also meet Lula during his visit to Brazil.
