Brazil. Preventive arrests amid fear of new attacks on schools

More than 100 people have been preventively arrested in Brazil amid rising violence and threats of new attacks on schools, the Brazilian Justice and Public Security Minister said at a news conference in Santa Catarina state.

On April 5, four children were killed in a school robbery in Santa Catarina state. It happened a month after that Brazil In 2008, another tragedy shocked the public: a thirteen-year-old student stabbed his teacher at a school in Sao Paulo.

In the last eight months, since September last year, Brazilian schools have been attacked five times by gunmen.

Minister of Justice and Public Security Flavio Dino said on Thursday at a press conference on the rise in violence that attacks in schools “are carried out both by lone wolves and by organized neo-Nazi groups detected by the federal police, who communicate with each other using social networks.”

More than 100 people have been detained nationwide.

Dino added that, among other things, out of concern for the safety of schools in the state of Santa Caterina, he donated 26 new police cars to the police in this state.
