Marilia Mendonca, one of the most popular contemporary singers in Brazil, died in a plane crash, authorities report. She was 26 years old. She was known as “The Queen of Suffering” – in her songs she focused on the experiences of women with failed relationships.
Singer Marilia Mendonca died in a plane crash. The plane she was flying crashed in one of the villages in the southeastern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. Among the victims are also the artist’s uncle, her producer and two crew members. An investigation was launched to establish the causes of the crash.
Who was the “Queen of Suffering”?
Marilia Mendonca started her career as a teenager. She was the star of Brazilian country music called sertanejo, winner of the 2019 Latin Grammy Award. She was called the “Queen of Suffering” because in her songs she focused on the experiences of women with failed relationships.
Last year, when concerts were canceled due to a pandemic, Mendonca appeared in a series of online concerts. One of them set the record for the most watched live broadcasts in the world with 3.3 million viewers on YouTube. In 2020, she was the most listened artist in Brazil on Spotify.
She was going to a concert
Mendonca was due to perform at a concert on Friday night in the city of Caratinga, 12 kilometers from the crash site. A few hours before the accident, she posted a video on social media in which she showed how she was preparing to board a private plane.
The singer’s associates initially reported that Mendonca had survived the crash after information about the plane crash emerged. Television later showed a crashed plane near a waterfall in a mountainous area, and the authorities informed about the artist’s death.
Brazilian footballer Neymar tweeted: “I don’t believe it, I don’t agree.” Singer Anitta, a popular Brazilian star, commented on the news of the artist’s death: “I can’t believe it.”
