Britney Spears was released on Friday from her guardianship in 2008. The pop star has been fighting for more than two years in a court of law to lift or change the conditions of 13 years of supervision over her private life and assets worth $ 60 million.

Britney Spears has been incapacitated since 2008. The artist was then struggling with mental difficulties and addictions. The singer’s father James “Jamie” Spears and his attorney Andrew Wallet at the time had control of all aspects of Britney’s life, including her estimated $ 60 million fortune.

“The guardianship of Britney Jean Spears’ person and property is terminated today,” Judge Brenda Penny announced on Friday. She added that the current curator will continue to work on regulating current financial matters.

The pap star in recent months has been demanding first and foremost that her father, James “Jamie” Spears, be removed from control of her life. In September, Los Angeles High Court Judge Brenda J. Penny acceded to the request and suspended the singer’s father from his custody. This role was temporarily taken over by chartered accountant John Zabel.

Spears has also been under the care of professional curator Jodi Montgomery since 2019. Now the court has decided to restore Britney to total control of her life.

Hours before the trial, the singer’s fiancé Sam Asghari posted a video on Instagram where he and Britney were wearing T-shirts with the words “#FreeBritney” and the caption “It’s a human rights movement.” #FreeBritney is a campaign initiated by the singer’s fans who question the ethics and legality of the control imposed on her and supported the star in the fight to remove the guardianship.

On the Friday before the hearing, Spears fans – dressed in pink clothing or sackcloth outfits – gathered in downtown Los Angeles to support their idol. Posters with the words “Justice for Britney” appeared among the audience. Some have written “Free Britney” in big pink letters in the street outside the courthouse. A pink Christmas tree with ribbons bearing the same slogan was set up in the street.

This is not the end of the dispute with Spears’s father

The end of guardianship does not mean the end of the legal dispute with James Spears. In July, the star said that she was ready to prosecute her father for “abuses” related to his guardianship. According to the BBC, they may involve financial exploitation or the imposition of excessive personal restraints on someone in care.

In June of this year, 39-year-old Britney Spears filed a lawsuit 20-minute testimony over the phone. She confessed that she suffered a trauma due to incapacitation and wants to regain her “life”. – I feel like everyone is allied against me, I feel intimidated, ignored and alone. I am tired of loneliness, she said, stressing that “she was used, she cannot sleep, she is depressed and deprived of privacy”. James Spears then argued – through lawyers – that he helped his daughter rehabilitate her career and always acted in her interest. In July, during a hearing, Britney asked for the end of her guardianship without having to undergo further medical examinations. The court then rejected her request.

In early September, the pop star’s father – before his guardianship was suspended – indicated in a court letter that he was ready to relinquish his powers. He said he would do it “in due course”. Information about the star’s father’s request appeared a week after the singer’s lawyer reported that James Spears had demanded two million dollars from Britney’s entourage to resign from guardianship.
