Extended detention for the Tate brothers

Court extended his detention several times for the next months. On Wednesday, he decided that the Tate brothers would stay behind bars until at least the end of April. Under Romanian law, if the investigation requires more time, prosecutors can apply for permission to extend the detention to 180 days.

According to the brothers’ lawyers, prosecutors did not introduce any new evidence at Wednesday’s hearing and suggested that the publicity of their clients contributed to the decision to keep them in custody.

The Tates’ spokeswoman, Mateea Petrescu, said it was the first time a judge had addressed the defendants directly at trial, asking them to respond to the prosecution’s argument that they were likely to flee and pose a threat to public order.

Later, there was a “dynamic exchange of views”, and the court finally decided to extend the detention for another 30 days, i.e. until the end of April. A spokeswoman assessed that the continued detention “irreparably damaged” the image of the brothers and that “it will take years to rebuild their reputation”.

Accusations of criminal activity by the Tate brothers

According to prosecutors, the Tate brothers lured their victims with the promise of a relationship. The victims were then taken to a property on the outskirts of Bucharest. According to the investigators, there, with the help of physical violence and intimidation, they were sexually abused by forcing them to create pornographic content for websites, which generated large financial profits. Investigators said they had located six women who had been sexually abused by the suspects. Prosecutors also said that one of the brothers raped one of the victims in March 2022. It was then that the investigation into the Tate brothers began.

Who is Andrew Tate

Andrew Tate gained notoriety for his misogynistic remarks and online hate speech. As a result, he was also removed from all major social media platforms, although after the acquisition of Twitter by Elon Musk, the controversial influencer’s account was restored in November last year.

The former professional kickboxer, who has American and British citizenship, has expressed the opinion that women are partly responsible for rapes and belong to men.

Last year, Tate admitted on a podcast that when he lived in London, he started making money by convincing many girls to video call and share the profits. He said he started with two girls, but later had 75 girls working for him, earning him $600,000 a month.

He also said he moved to Romania in connection with a British investigation into him on allegations of sexual assault. However, the charges in this case were eventually dropped.
