Bruce (Xiaoyu) Liu is a complete pianist. He has a phenomenal technique that allows him to bring out the most amazing colors from the piano, said the musicologist, conductor and journalist of “Ruch Muzyczny” Krzysztof Stefański, commenting on the results of the 18th Chopin Competition.

Bruce (Xiaoyu) Liu was born on May 8, 1997 in Paris, graduated from the Montreal Conservatory of Music in the class of Richard Raymond, and currently continues his studies with Dang Thai Son. He has collaborated with such ensembles as the Cleveland and Montreal Symphony Orchestras, the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra of the Americas, Camerata Jerusalem, and has given a series of concerts with the China NCPA Orchestra.

Recently, he has also made two tours of China with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine and the Symphony Orchestra of the Lviv Regional Philharmonic, performing, among others, at the Beijing National Center for the Performing Arts and Concert Hall and the Oriental Arts Center in Shanghai, as well as the Orchester Lamoureux in Salle Gaveau. He is a laureate of many international piano competitions, incl. in Sendai, Montreal, Viseu and Tel Aviv.

– I do not know what to say. So many emotions … I’m honored with this award. Thank you to the jurors and my family. Competitions help musicians to develop. Some say that competitions are not good for musicians, but they inspire me – he said after the verdict was announced. – If you have a passion for something, just do it. Don’t look at others for what they say and think. Follow what you think is good for yourself. On your way you will always encounter failures, problems and negative people, at such moments you have to keep going and not giving up.

During the Thursday concert at the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera, all winners of the Chopin Competition will perform short recitals, and the winner, Bruce Liu, will perform the Piano Concerto in E minor, Op. 11 with the accompaniment of the National Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Andrzej Boreyka.

Winners’ concert on Thursday

The laureates’ concerts will be held on Thursday at the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera, and on Friday and Saturday at the National Philharmonic.

During the Thursday concert, the awards gala will be held for the winners of the competition.

The director of the Fryderyk Chopin Institute, Artur Szklener, announced that all prize winners will perform short recitals during the Thursday concert, and the winner, Bruce Liu, will perform the Piano Concerto in E minor, Op. 11 by Fryderyk Chopin with the accompaniment of the National Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Andrzej Boreyka.

President Andrzej Duda and his wife Agata Kornhauser-Duda will take part in the event. During the ceremony, the President of the Republic of Poland will present the Gold Medal to the winner of the 1st Prize.
