British police have arrested a man who approached the gates of Buckingham Palace and threw what appeared to be shooting bullets into the premises, Reuters reported, citing information from local police. It was reported that King Charles III was not in the territory of the residence at the time of the incident.
“The man has been arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon,” the police said in a statement, adding that specialists carried out a controlled explosion.
According to the statement, the officers arrested the man and detained him in custody. It was also reported that police cordons were set up near the palace.
Preparations for the coronation
Reuters points out that the incident happened as police and law enforcement prepare for the coronation of King Charles on Saturday. The official coronation ceremony will be attended by heads of state from around the world, and crowds are expected on the streets of London at this time.
Buckingham Palace stated that the King was not on the territory of the residence at the time of the incident.
