A leopard named Dante escaped Sunday while feeding from a zoo in the Bulgarian town of Stara Zagora. The animal was searched for by the police and fire brigade, and it was necessary to close the facility for the duration of the operation.

The leopard escaped Sunday morning from its enclosure while feeding. The animal was located quite quickly. He was sedated and then transported back to the zoo. Dante, because that is the leopard’s name, was not injured.

“In connection with this incident, responsible employees will be punished in accordance with the Act on Administrative Offenses and Penalties and the Labor Code,” the zoo wrote on its Facebook profile. “The Municipality of Stara Zagora apologizes for the inconvenience caused to visitors to the Zoo!” – added.

Located on the territory of the zoo in the city of Stara Zagora, people were urgently evacuated. In an interview with TV channel BTV, visitors, mostly families with small children, said they were taken out of the garden as soon as they entered. None of them noticed the leopard that the police and fire brigade were looking for.

– We paid for the entrance tickets to the zoo, but a few seconds after entering, the security asked us to leave the area because the leopard escaped from the enclosure. All visitors were evacuated, emergency services arrived, said one of the women who visited the zoo.

A few years ago, a large tiger escaped from a zoo in northern Bulgaria’s Lovech. Despite the protests of the population, the animal was shot.
