The Bulgarian Ministry of the Interior has informed that several dozen migrants have been detained in the vicinity of Sofia, the country’s capital. According to data from the Ministry of the Interior, since July, more than half of the illegal migrants crossing Bulgaria’s border are Afghans.
Dozens of migrants were detained in the last 24 hours in the vicinity of Bulgaria’s capital Sofia, the Interior Ministry said on Monday. A group of 28 Afghans was detained near the city of Ichtiman. They reported that they were transported by truck from the border with Turkey, which they crossed illegally.
The second group of 20 was discovered during a routine police inspection in an industrial district of Sofia. It is also about Afghans aged around 20-25. The Ministry of the Interior reports that at least 30-40 migrants are detained in Sofia every weekend.
Bulgaria plans to send troops to the border with Turkey
According to data from the Ministry of the Interior, since July, more than half of the illegal migrants crossing Bulgaria’s border are Afghans. In July, 1,375 irregular migrants were detained in the country, four times more than in the corresponding month of 2020.
Bulgarian authorities are preparing to send border police and army troops to the border with Turkey – more than 1,000 people are involved. However, additional funding is needed to implement this decision, which has not yet been approved by Parliament.
