Bulgaria’s interior ministry said an explosion occurred in front of a column of vehicles protecting Bulgarian Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev.
According to the head of the operational services of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Petyr Todorov, there are no casualties or injuries. The incident happened shortly before noon, but it was reported two hours later.
State TV reported that “the blast was quite strong” and according to experts, “it was not only intended to intimidate people in the vehicles.”
Explosion on the route from Sofia to the city of Samokov
The explosion occurred on the route from Sofia to the city of Samokov, about 60 kilometers from the capital. The Ministry of the Interior has not yet provided information on the type of explosive device. The Sofia – Samokov road was closed.
The police, military police, organized crime and counterintelligence services arrived at the site of the explosion. Deputy Chief Prosecutor Borislaw Sarafow also appeared.
Extraordinary meeting of the management of the Ministry of the Interior
Todorov said that Prime Minister Gylyb Donov had called an extraordinary meeting of the leadership of the Interior Ministry, secret services and the prosecutor’s office for Tuesday.
Geshev’s protection is provided by the National Security Service, which is subordinated to the president. The Prosecutor General has received threats several times, and last week he said that he was also threatened by journalists. One of the packages sent to the prosecutor contained a bullet.
