Unidentified gunmen killed 40 people and wounded 33 in northern Burkina Faso, Reuters reported on Sunday, citing a government statement in Ouagadougou.

Burkina Faso’s regular army and volunteers supporting the army were among those killed in the Saturday attack.

Burkina Faso is one of many West African countries where government forces are battling armed Islamist groups. They were initially organized in neighboring Mali and have spread throughout the region over the last decade.

Warrant for French soldiers

In January, authorities in Burkina Faso, a former French colony, ordered French soldiers stationed there under a 2018 agreement to leave the country within a month. However, the government in Ouagadougou assured Paris that it would not follow Mali’s example and would not ask mercenaries from the Russian Wagner Group to support its army, although a group of Putin mercenaries had already visited Burkina Faso. France withdrew its troops from neighboring Mali in 2022 as the military junta there struck a defense deal with the Wagner Group.
