In 2001, in Wisła, in the town of Grabówko (Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship), the body of Karolina K., then 19, was found. After 23 years, police officers from Bydgoszcz announced that the case had been solved. The charges were brought against 47-year-old Adrian W., who is already serving a life sentence for the murder of another young woman in August 2002.

On September 2, 2001, Karolina K., then 19, went with her brother to Pruszcz Pomorski, where the harvest festival was taking place. He came home earlier, and she, along with others, stayed until the end of the party, which ended around 2 a.m. Karolina never returned home and her family reported her missing.

– On September 16, 2001, a walker came across the body of a woman in the Vistula River in the town of Grabówko, approximately 13 kilometers away from the place where the harvest festival was held. Only specialized tests confirmed the suspicions of the investigators and the family that it was the body of the missing 19-year-old – explains Junior Inspector Monika Chlebicz, spokeswoman for the Provincial Police Headquarters in Bydgoszcz.

The case was discontinued

The findings showed that 25-year-old Adrian W., who had left the prison where he was serving a sentence for rape two months earlier, also had fun at the harvest festival.

– The man was already interrogated in the case, but he denied knowing or having any contact with the missing woman. Although the testimony of some witnesses contradicted this, there was no evidence that a crime had occurred. The case was discontinued in March 2002 due to the lack of data sufficient to justify that a crime had occurred – adds Chlebicz.

Re-investigation

After a dozen or so years, Bydgoszcz police officers and the prosecutor returned to this case. This was mainly due to the progress in technology and the possibility of examining traces. Samples were taken again from traces secured years ago and sent to the expert.

– He stated that the items secured in Adrian W.'s apartment contained genetic material belonging to the missing Karolina K., and that this type of trace could only be left by a person staying in a given place. This refuted Adrian W.'s thesis that the 19-year-old had never been to his place – explains the policewoman.

He heard the charges

At the beginning of May this year, Adrian W., now 47, was brought from the prison where he is serving a life sentence for the murder of a young woman in August 2002 to the District Prosecutor's Office in Bydgoszcz.

– The prosecutor charged him with murdering Karolina K. between September 2 and 16, 2001, and then throwing her body into the Vistula River. By decision of the court and at the request of the prosecutor, the man was arrested for three months. The investigation into this case is ongoing, but it is very likely that Adrian W. will answer for the crime from many years ago, for which he is now suspected – sums up the spokeswoman of the Bydgoszcz police.
