The trial of a Hollywood cinematographer has started before the court in Bydgoszcz. Matthew L. is accused of attacking a paramedic and later intervening police officers in a hotel in Bydgoszcz in November 2018. The accused is a well-known cinematographer – he was nominated for an Oscar for his cinematography in “Black Swan”. He stayed in Poland on the occasion of the Camerimage Film Festival. He does not admit to the attack on the rescuer and the policemen.

The trial of Matthew L. started on Monday in a court in Bydgoszcz. The man is responsible for the attack on the paramedic who provided him aid, and then violation of bodily inviolability and insulting the intervening policemen. The event was supposed to take place in November 2018, when the American cinematographer attended the Camerimage Film Festival.

The accused is liable free of charge after paying 100,000 zlotys of bail. The court agreed that during the trial, the American would be questioned online without having to leave the United States.

Matthew L. submits explanations online

– Our client does not admit to committing the alleged acts. He will provide explanations, but not today, but we have applied for them to be submitted personally under the cooperation agreement between the United States and Poland in the USA – says Marcin Mamiński, defense attorney of Matthew L.

He also admits that the accused pleaded guilty during an earlier questioning in the prosecutor’s office. – However, he did it only because he received such legal advice from the defense lawyers at the time – explains the lawyer.

The injured paramedic says, in turn, that the whole situation was recorded by hotel cameras, and the defendant’s partner was also supposed to be a witness. – I think that it is difficult to discuss this type of evidence here, as well as the opinions of doctors regarding the health losses that I suffered thanks to the operator – says Marcin Gizicki.

For violating the inviolability of a public official on duty, he may be imprisoned for up to three years.

The struggle and the attack took place in the morning

The attack took place in November 2018. When hotel staff noticed in the morning that Matthew L. was staggering on his feet, they called an ambulance. Then the accused was about to attack one of the rescuers. The police were notified of the case.

– At five in the morning, we had a report about a row with paramedics in one of the hotels in Bydgoszcz, which was to be initiated by a 50-year-old US citizen. The man struggled with the rescuers and did not respond to the policemen’s orders. Sam had facial injuries. His aggression was directed towards the policemen, whom he duped and violated their bodily integrity – then informed Monika Chlebicz, a spokesman for the Provincial Police Headquarters in Bydgoszcz.

As the study later showed, the man had three levels of alcohol in his blood.

Matthew L. was nominated for an Academy Award for “Black Swan”. L. has also photographed other Darren Aronofsky’s films “Pi”, “Sources” and “Requiem for a Dream.” In 2008 and 2010, he also worked on the Hollywood hits “Iron Man” and “Iron Man 2”.
