A winter thunderstorm hit Toronto, bringing with it a heavy snowstorm. On the night from Friday to Saturday, the city was covered with 30 centimeters of snow in just a few hours. Due to difficult weather conditions, it was necessary to cancel some flights from Canadian airports.

Toronto, Canada’s largest city, is digging out after a snowstorm. On the night from Friday to Saturday in the province of Ontario there were heavy snowfalls and rare for this time of year storm with lightning.

Snow, ice and lightning

The snowstorm caused traffic disruptions throughout the city. On Friday evening, the Ontario traffic police said a layer of ice had formed on city roads, significantly extending braking distances. Police officers asked residents to exercise full caution, and when traveling on an unfamiliar road, also to stop before every intersection – it was raining so hard that drivers could have difficulty seeing the signs.

Airlines have urged passengers to check the status of their flights, especially at Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal airports. Canada’s largest airport, Pearson International in Toronto, said on Saturday that of the 459 planned departures, nearly 34 percent were canceled and of the planned 484 arrivals, 38 percent were cancelled.

22 to 30 centimeters of snow had fallen in the Greater Toronto Area by 6 a.m. Saturday, according to Environment Canada. Toronto authorities have announced that they are treating the current situation as a special condition, which means that snow will need to be removed from the streets. Such decisions are rare – for example, in January 2022, the city was removing snow when more than half a meter of white powder fell in 16 hours.
