Canada – sanctions. Russian plane impounded

The Canadian government has confiscated a Russian plane at Toronto airport, Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said. The funds obtained will be transferred to Ukraine. Canada also imposed new sanctions on Russia.

Confiscated by Canada aircraft registered in Russia Antonov 124, belongs to a subsidiary of Volga-Dnepr Airlines LLC and Volga-Dnepr Group. Both companies were previously sanctioned by Canada for their complicity in Russia’s war in Ukraine. The seized aircraft landed at Pearson International on February 27, 2022, and has been there ever since. Canadian airspace is closed to Russian aircraft.

First such confiscation

The funds obtained from the takeover of the aircraft will be transferred in cooperation with the government of Ukraine to “compensate victims of violations human rightsthe restoration of international peace and security or the reconstruction of Ukraine.

“This is the first physical confiscation of assets seized by the Government of Canada (…) under the provisions of the Special Economic Measures Act,” the release said. Such actions were announced in June last year, when regulations enabling the takeover and sale of Russian assets in Canada came into force in connection with Russia’s attack on Ukraine February 24, 2022.

“Canada sends a clear message to the Russian regime that those who support and take advantage of the Kremlin’s aggressive war have nowhere to hide,” Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said in a statement.

Canada announced its first concrete actions to take over frozen Russian assets in December last year, when it announced the takeover and forfeiture to the state of Granite Capital Holdings Ltd., a company worth USD 26 million, owned by a Russian oligarch subject to Canadian sanctions Roman Abramowicz.

Visit to Kiev

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland paid a visit to Kiev on Saturday, where they met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trudeau announced Canada’s $500 million worth of new military aid and training for Ukrainian pilots. In addition, Trudeau announced further sanctions against Russia, covering 24 people and 17 entities.
