The selection of Justin Trudeau's successor as prime minister and leader of the Liberal Party will be supervised by a special team. This decision was announced on Monday by the prime minister's adviser for national security and intelligence Nathalie Drouin.
“Government Canada takes seriously its responsibility to protect our democracy from foreign influence. While leadership election campaigns are the responsibility of political parties, all ministries and agencies are monitoring the environment and working together to address it potential risk of foreign influence“- it was written in the statement.
Several Canadian agencies work together to counter foreign influence
The SITE (Security and Intelligence Threats to Elections) team appointed by Drouin was established in 2019 and its task is to supervising election security federal government and protect against the risk of foreign influence, as well as counteracting attempts at such influence. It consists of representatives interview (Canadian Security Intelligence Service – CSIS), Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP – Police federal), Ministry of Foreign Affairs i Communications Security Establishment (CSE – electronic interview).
Since May 2023, SITE has also been analyzing other elections and has already observed them ten by-elections. The team submits its reports to the government commission.
Candidates for the position of leader of the Liberal party will be able to meet with the team at special briefingsincluding cybersecurity and thorough browsing payment sources. Similar assistance will also be offered in the future to all partieswhose representatives are in the House of Commons – stated in the announcement.
