Strong explosions hit two Canadian towns on Thursday. A propane distribution station exploded in Saint-Roch-de-l’Achigan, Quebec. Three people are believed to be missing. Earlier, a rendering plant in St. Catharines, Ontario.

An explosion at the propane distribution station in Saint-Roch-de-l’Achigan occurred before noon local time, then a violent fire engulfed the entire station. It is not known how many people were in the building at the time of the explosion, local media reported. Public broadcaster Radio-Canada quoted Saint-Roch-de-l’Achigan mayor Sebastien Marcil as saying three people had not been found during the night.

The cause of the explosion that completely destroyed the station is under investigation. Local authorities said at a press conference on Thursday that residents of about 100 homes within a one-kilometre radius had to be evacuated.

According to the fire brigade, there is no longer a risk of further gas explosions, but there are still many cylinders at the site, and there are spilled flammable substances. The surrounding roads have been closed. According to TVA Nouvelles, about 50 firefighters were on site at night.

Radio-Canada reported that firefighters used a drone to assess the situation. Fighting the fire was further complicated by the impossibility of using water, as there is a risk of contamination of the nearby river.

Public broadcaster CBC said one person was hospitalized with severe burns and another without physical injuries. Some local residents were evacuated, others were advised to stay indoors and close their windows due to the smoke. Nearby roads have been closed.
