The lava from the Cumbre Vieja volcano in La Palma, Canary Island, moves slower than expected and did not reach the Atlantic waters on Monday. The Polish woman, Karolina Bazydło, who lives there, talked about the situation on the island on TVN24. – The explosion was a surprise to everyone. Nobody expected it to be so fast, so immediately. A large part of the island is cut off from the world, she reported.

Cumbre Vieja volcano erupted on the Canarian island of La Palma on Sunday. The lava was expected to reach the waters of the Atlantic Ocean on Monday evening, but it is moving more slowly. That day, the stream was about halfway between the volcano and the shoreline, officials said. Previously, there were warnings about the risk of an explosion and the release of clouds of toxic gases when the lava reaches the water.

Karolina Bazydło, a Polish woman living there, spoke about the situation on the island in “Get up and you know” on TVN24.

“The situation is dire,” she said. As she pointed out, this is the first volcanic eruption, which “it is not known how long it may last, it may last months and no one can tell.”

Karolina has been living in La Palma for 20 years. During this time, she said, she had heard that a volcanic eruption was probable, but it could only happen in 20-50 years. – This last week and the outbreak was a surprise to everyone. Nobody expected it to be so fast, so immediately, in such a tragic place with many, many houses, she reported.

So far, more than five thousand people have been evacuated and about 100 homes have been damaged. Nobody was hurt.

– In the first moment there was the evacuation of elderly people and animals. There was not really time to evacuate everyone, to prepare everyone, – said the TVN24 interlocutor. – Lava has already flooded, unfortunately, two roads. She emphasized that “there are not many of them” on the whole island, so flooding two roads is a big problem. “Much of the island is cut off from the rest of the world,” she added.
