One of the most important figures of modern European cinema Juliette Binoche became the chairwoman of the jury of the Main Competition of the Cannes Film Festival. The French actress will take over this honor from the American Greta Gerwig.

The Cannes Film Festival announced on Tuesday that Juliette Binoche became the chairwoman of the Jury of the Main Competition 78. The actress takes over the reins from the American filmmaker Greta Gerwig, who carried out the work of the jury last year and handed the golden palm to Sean Baker, the director “Anory”.

Thus, for the second time in history, year after year, the chairwoman of the Jury of the Main Competition is a woman. It happened for the first time nearly 60 years ago, when in 1965 the British-American-French actress Olivia de Havilland (the first woman at the head of the jury of the main competition in Cannes) became the chairwoman. In 1966, the jury of this competition was the Italian-French actress Sophia Loren.

The actress appeared for the first time in Cannes on the occasion of the premiere of the film “Meeting” directed by Andre Techine in 1985. The film was appreciated by the award for the best directing. Nina's role was one of the first breakthrough in her career.

The Cannes Film Festival is one of the five most important events of this type in the world. The “Big Five” also includes: Sundance Film Festival, the International Film Festival in Berlin – Berlinale, the International Film Festival in Venice and the International Film Festival in Toronto. The most important award of the main competition in Cannes is the Golden Palma – the most prestigious cinema world laurel and widely recognized as the film equivalent of the Nobel Literary Award.

The only European with a “triple crown”

Binoche is the first and only European actress who has a “triple crown” – acting awards of the three most important European festivals. In 1993, she was awarded the Volpie Cup for the best actress of the International Film Festival in Venice for the main role in “Three Colors. Blue” directed by Krzysztof Kieślowski. Then – in 1997 – she received a silver bear for the best actress for the main role in Anthony Minghelli's “English patient”. The award for the best actress of the Canneński Main Competition won the role of Elle in the drama “Subscriptions from Tuscany” directed by Abbas Kirostami in 2010.

The second actress who won the “triple crown” of European festivals is American Julianne Moore. However, only two American actors can boast of a “triple crown”: the first was Jack Lemmon, the second – Sean Pean.

During her career, Binoche had the opportunity to cooperate with a group of the most outstanding filmmakers and filmmakers in history. Jean-Luc Godard, Philip Kaufman, Jacques Dillon, Leos Carax, Krzysztof Kieślowski, Abbas Kirostami, Chantal Akerman, Michael Haneke, Anthony Minghella, Abel Ferrara, Olivier Assayas, Isabel Coixet, Bruno Dumont, Hirocazu Kore-Ed, Claire Denis or Tranis Anh Hung – these are just some of them.
