“A school bag full of smiles” is one of the most important Caritas Polska campaigns for children. Since its launch in 2009, the organization has provided the youngest with over 210,000 completed school starter kits.

As part of this year’s campaign, 15,000 children from Poland and abroad will receive school starter kits, including 2,000 for LithuaniaBelarus and Ukraine. Five thousand will go to Ukrainian children in Poland. Due to the earthquake in Lebanon and in Syria, this year the action was extended to the purchase of 700 backpacks for children from this area. The final of the action took place on August 20 in Stara Bircza near Przemyśl.

– Most of the people who come to us are people from Ukraine. And since we are at the end of August, we all think – both Polish parents and foreign parents – that our children will go to school soon – said Renata Makuch from the Migrant and Refugee Assistance Center of Caritas Polska to TVN24.

She noted that “preparation for school, on the one hand, is a joyful time, because children are waiting to meet their friends and teachers, but for parents it is sometimes a cause for worry.”

Magdalena Masiak from Caritas Polska noted that “we noticed a big problem and we are trying to support children in the Middle East, so this year the backpacks will go to Syria and to Lebanon.”

The presidential couple supported the action

Six layettes were completed by the presidential couple. – The better prepared our children are for school, the more pleasant the beginning of the year will be for them. Hence our concern to ensure that on September 4, every student in Poland has everything they need to learn in their backpacks – he said Andrzej Duda in a video posted on Twitter by the Chancellery of the President.

The First Lady pointed out that “for some it will be an emotional first meeting with school, with new friends, for others it will be a return to well-known classrooms and friends they haven’t seen for a long time.”
