Chancellor Olaf Scholz calls for a peaceful resolution of the crisis on the border between Russia and Ukraine

During Monday’s visit to Madrid, the German chancellor called for all measures to be taken to avoid an armed conflict on the border between Russia and Ukraine. Olaf Scholz emphasized that the possible invasion of Moscow would bring suffering to everyone.

At a press conference after talks with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz confirmed that the problem of Russia’s threat to Ukraine was one of the main topics of Monday’s meeting. He said that he considered the situation on the border of both countries “serious”.


– Russia’s possible military aggression against Ukraine will have severe political and economic consequences. Therefore, we must do everything we can to avoid this extreme situation that would cause suffering for everyone, ‘said Scholz.

He indicated that negotiations with Russia in various formats are currently underway, including as part of direct talks between Moscow and Washington, as well as the Kremlin and NATO authorities.

The chancellor did not answer the question of one of the German journalists who wanted to know why Berlin was speaking out against arms deliveries to Ukraine. The journalist recalled that at the same time Berlin treats the Russo-German gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 as a “private enterprise”.

Sanchez also indicated the need to calm down the situation on the Russian-Ukrainian border. He stated that it is essential to respect borders in Europe. He supported Scholz, stressing that “all measures are necessary” to reduce the risk of a Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Sanchez, who recalled that the North Atlantic Alliance summit will be held in the Spanish capital in June, revealed that during Monday’s meeting in Madrid he had agreed with the chancellor to organize bilateral talks between the Spanish and German authorities in the coming months.

The head of Spain’s center-left government added that another of the topics discussed on Monday was the implementation of the EU’s economic recovery program after the coronavirus crisis. – We share the political and social vision of Europe with the current German government – said Sanchez, pointing to the need for intensive actions, especially in the field of ecology and digital transformation.

Sanchez pointed to the “extremely strong” economic ties between Germany and Spain, the large presence of German tourists in Spain amounting to around 11 million people annually, as well as intense trade. He noted that only in 2020, marked by the coronavirus crisis, it reached the level of EUR 63 billion.
