President Andrzej Duda presented Lieutenant General Wiesław Kukula with the nomination act for the position of the General Commander of the Branches of the Armed Forces, and Brigadier General Maciej Klisz with the nomination for the position of Commander of the Territorial Defense Forces. During the ceremony, Duda said that “the basic task of the command staff is to form the Polish Armed Forces in such a way that no one would think that the Republic could be attacked.”

On Monday Andrzej Duda handed over the act of appointment to the position of the General Commander of the Branches of the Armed Forces to Lieutenant General Wiesław Kukula. In turn, Brigadier General Maciej Klisz received from the President the act of appointment to the position of the Commander of the Territorial Defense Forces. The President also decorated General Jarosław Mika with the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.

Generals Kukuła and Klisz will begin their duties on Tuesday, February 7.

– This is one of the most important moments in the functioning of the Polish Army in recent years – said the president during the ceremony at the Presidential Palace.

Duda assessed that he would head the General Command of the Branches of the Polish Armed Forces for two terms, a special crowning achievement of General Jarosław Mika’s military career. He thanked him for his conscientious service to the homeland and for the effective implementation of all tasks in this position, especially in the difficult period of the last three years. He emphasized that under Mika’s command polish army faced the biggest challenges in over 30 years.

“This is a great task that is and must be carried out all the time”

The president also said that the new commander, General Wiesław Kukuła, faces many challenges, including the implementation of new weapons in the Polish army. – The basic task of us, politicians, but also of the commanding staff, is to form the Polish Armed Forces in such a way that no one would think that it is possible to attack the Republic, disturb the peace of our fellow citizens, and expose them to danger – he said.

He stressed that the Polish army must be sufficiently well equipped, trained, efficient, strong and organized to deter any potential attacker. – This is a great task that is and must be carried out all the time – he added.

Duda also appreciated Kukuła’s merits in creating the Territorial Defense Forces. He stressed that the task of completing the creation process WOT passes into the hands of General Maciej Klisz. Duda asked him to make good use of the potential of WOT soldiers, who – as he said – are “an extraordinary national asset”, patriots who want to serve their homeland and are ready to die in its defense, ready to die helping another man.

Changes in command positions

According to the BBN, the changes in command positions are related to the end of the term of office of General Jarosław Mika as the General Commander of the Branches of the Armed Forces and Lieutenant General Wiesław Kukuła as the Commander of the Territorial Defense Forces. Gen. Kukuła’s term of office ended at the end of 2022, since then Gen. Klisz has been the commander.

In 2016, General Kukuła was appointed by the then head of the Ministry of National Defense to the position of WOT commander. Previously, he served, among others, in the Polish Military Contingent in Iraqwas also the commander of the Commando Military Unit.

General Klisz has been the deputy commander of the WOT since 2020, previously he was the chief of staff of the formation. He also worked, among others, in the Special Forces Command, he was also the chief of staff of the Commando Military Unit. He participated in missions in Bosnia and Herzegovinaas well as Afghanistan.

General Mika, who is ending his term as the General Commander of the Armed Forces, has held this position since 2017. Earlier, among others, he commanded the 11th Lubuska Armored Cavalry Division, was the chief of staff of the 12th Szczecin Mechanized Division, he also served as part of the Polish Military Contingent in Iraq, he also took part in the ISAF mission in Afghanistan.
