The Chief Sanitary Inspectorate issued a warning on Wednesday regarding the detection of an undeclared allergenic substance – sulfur dioxide in a specific batch of a product called: Aubergine paste with dried tomatoes.

As part of the public food warning, the Chief Sanitary Inspector informed that the presence of sulfur dioxide (E 220) was detected as a result of official activities of the State Sanitary Inspection. The product label does not provide adequate information regarding the presence of this allergenic ingredient. Consumption of the product by people allergic to sulfur dioxide and sulphites may cause an allergic reaction in them.

It is about the product Eggplant paste with dried tomatoes, VEGGIE, 190 g, batch number 02 005 1 and best before date: January 2024. The manufacturer is Greek Trade sp. z oo, ul. Tadeusza Śliwiaka 14, 30-797 Kraków. Manufactured for Carrefour Polska Sp. z o. o., ul. Targowa 72, 03-734 Warsaw.

GIS reported that the entities responsible for the product had suspended the sale of the batch in question and informed customers about the possibility of returning the product at Carrefour outlets. Explanatory proceedings are conducted by the State Sanitary Inspection authorities in cooperation with the manufacturer in order to determine the source of sulfur dioxide in the product and the scope of non-compliance.

Recommendations for consumers

According to the GIS, people with allergies or intolerance to sulfur dioxide and sulphites should not consume the batch of the product indicated in the message.
