The squirrel Sajmiri, a monkey that occurs, inter alia, in the Amazon basin, was born in the Wrocław zoo. Since 2011, a total of 36 individuals of this species have been born here. The population of these monkeys in the wild is drastically declining. In the wild, they are massively fished for the needs of research and trade.

Conservative breeding of squirrel sajmirs is conducted in the Wrocław zoo. Since 2011, 36 monkeys of this species have been born here. The last one at the beginning of November. – The baby was born just over two weeks ago. On the second day, he has passed from the belly to his mother’s back and holds tight. For now, he is only staying with his mother – he sleeps and drinks her milk. It will be like this for three weeks. Then he will be raised by sisters and aunts, because this is the case with this species – said Jacek Góral, who has been looking after the sajmirs since the beginning of their breeding in the Wrocław zoo.

Monkeys of this species live in nature, among others in the Amazon basin. Their population is declining drastically as they are being fished en masse. They go to laboratories or private homes. – Squirrel sajmiri was considered a model species for research. That is why it was caught in hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of individuals for various biomedical and cosmetological research. Most of these monkeys lived short lived because the research was aggressive, e.g. being infected with various strains of bacteria or viruses. Now the use of animals in tests has been reduced, but voices are heard that the future is biogenetics based on experiments on our cousins - monkeys. I hope that it will not happen – emphasized the president of the Wrocław zoo, Radosław Ratajszczak.

“Child of the Sun”

The squirrel sajmiri (Saimiri sciureus) is called the “child of the sun” because it lives in a tropical climate and needs warmth and light. It lives in the treetops in the wet forests of Brazil, Guyana, French Guiana and Suriname. It belongs to small monkeys, its body length reaches 35 cm and its weight ranges from 0.5 to 1.4 kg. It has a characteristic coloration – from white, through gray-olive to orange. What distinguishes it is the drawing of the face – it has clearly white eyes around the eyes on a black background.

It belongs to social species, lives in groups of up to 100 individuals. They live up to 20 years, although in specialized farms even 30 years (PAP)
