Dead cormorants have been found on beaches in northern and central Chile for more than a week. Scientists do not know the cause of the mass death of these animals, so far avian flu has been ruled out.

More than 3,500 Peruvian cormorants have been found dead since May 26 (leucocarbo bougainvilliorum). These birds with black and white plumage are found along the coast of South America, mainly in the west of the continent.

The research carried out did not bring information about the causes of mass deaths, the AFP agency reported on Saturday, citing the local Agriculture and Livestock Services (SAG). It is only known that they were not caused by bird flu.

“Something is happening in the sea that is killing the fish-eating birds”

Jorge Mautz, director of the SAG office in Coquimbo, 400 kilometers north of the capital Santiago, believes the cause is not on land but in water. “Something’s going on in the sea that’s killing the fish-eating birds,” Mautz speculates.

Since December last year, Chile has been severely affected by avian flu. As a result, about 10 percent of Peruvian penguins, also known as Humboldt penguins, became extinct, according to AFP.
