Chile. Massive train collision. At least two people are dead

The train collision occurred on Thursday San Bernadro in Chile. As reported by the Associated Press, in the incident at least two workers died railwayand nine other people were injured.

A freight train collided with another machine during a test run. The local police said they would investigate the circumstances of the accident. Photos from the scene show how one of the wagons was on the roof of the freight train. The force of the impact was so strong that many metal elements were torn to pieces.

“Authorities said they detained the test train driver and a rail operator for questioning on charges of careless driving,” the Associated Press reported.

Several emergency service vehicles were dispatched to the scene, and a helicopter circled over the heads of the residents of San Bernardo. After the trains collided railway traffic was suspended.

The state-owned railway company said the eight-car freight train was carrying 1,346 tons of copper, Chile's main export. There were several people on board at the time of the incident. The second machine was traveled by 10 railway workers at that time they were doing a speed test.

Train collision. No warning issued

As we read, the recording from surveillance cameras showed that when the collision occurred, both machines were moving at high speed. It is unclear why the test-run train was not alerted to the approaching freight train.

– We must identify the causes and take appropriate measures, said Transport Minister Juan Carlos Munoz.

Four citizens were among the injured Chin, who drove the test train. Six people are in hospital, including one in the intensive care unit.
