Chile. The number of victims of fires in the central part of the country is increasing

The death toll from the fires raging in central Chile has increased. According to the country’s authorities, at least 112 people died in the disaster, and the fate of many inhabitants of the region remains unknown. Thousands of people lost all their belongings in the fire.

As reported by the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (Senapred) on Sunday evening, death toll from fires in the Valparaiso region in central Chile it has increased to 112. So far, 32 bodies have been identified, and hundreds of people remain missing. On Monday and Tuesday, national mourning was announced in the country.

Fighting the flames

According to Senapred data, the fire most severely affected the nature reserve around Lake Penuelas – there, it consumed an area of ​​8,500 hectares. The flames are consuming not only forest areas. Deputy Interior Minister Manuel Monsalve said on Sunday that about 14,000 houses were devastated in the region of Vina del Mar and Quilpue alone.

– The wind was terrible and the heat was scorching. There was no respite. People were running away, scattering in all directions, one of the region’s inhabitants told the Reuters news agency.

Chilean authorities imposed curfews in the hardest-hit areas. In addition to firefighters, the army is helping in the fight against the fire, and firefighting is also carried out from the air.

Although wildfires are relatively common in the southern hemisphere during the summer months, they rarely reach this scale. It is the worst disaster in Chile since the 2010 earthquake, which killed about 500 people.
