The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued two announcements on Sunday, in which the authorities in Beijing expressed “firm opposition” to allowing Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te to stop over in Hawaii, as well as the State Department's approval of the sale of military equipment to this country in the amount of $385 million.

“China strongly condemns the US organization of the 'stopover' for Lai Ching-te and has lodged a serious official protest” against the US side, an unnamed spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

The first stop of President Lai, who set off on his first foreign trip on Saturday, including the Marshall Islands, Tuvalu and Palau, was a stopover in Hawaii. He was welcomed there by the governor of that state. Chinese authorities oppose any formal contacts between foreign officials and the authorities Taiwan.

On Friday, Washington announced the sale of military equipment to Taiwan, including spare parts for F-16 fighters and radar systems, which, according to the authorities in Beijing, constitutes a “serious violation of China's sovereignty and security interests,” it said in another statement.

USA they do not maintain formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, but are considered its greatest ally and arms supplier, which angers Beijing.
