A gas explosion occurred at a restaurant in the northwestern city of Yinchuan on Wednesday evening, the Xinhua news agency reported on Thursday. At least 31 people were killed and seven injured, including one in a critical condition.

The explosion occurred in the guest service area of ​​the Fuyang barbecue restaurant in a residential area in the city center. The victims suffered burns or were hit by shards of glass.

According to preliminary findings, the explosion was caused by the escaping of liquefied natural gas from a leaky tank.

The photos provided by the official CCTV show several firefighters fighting the flames and smoke and the street littered with shards of glass and restaurant equipment.

Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and ordered the local authorities to do their best to treat the injured and declared that the security situation in key industries and the economy should be improved, CCTV reported.

The tragedy occurred on the eve of the three-day Dragon Festival, during which the Chinese meet with family or friends.
