Honduras and China have established diplomatic relations, a spokeswoman for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. Earlier, the Honduran government said it was severing diplomatic ties with Taiwan. “The government of the Republic of Honduras recognizes the existence of only one China in the world,” the Honduran foreign ministry said in a statement.

China and Honduras have just established diplomatic relations,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying tweeted, adding a photo of Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang shaking hands with his Honduran counterpart Enrique Reina, who is currently in Beijing.

In a Saturday evening press release, Reina said “at the behest of” the president Honduras Xiomara Castro” reported Taiwan about the decision to sever diplomatic relations.” “The government of the Republic of Honduras recognizes the existence of only one China in the world and recognizes that the government of the People’s Republic of China is the only legitimate government that represents all of China,” the Honduran Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Twitter.

In response, Taiwanese Foreign Minister Joseph Wu accused Honduras of “delusion” to China’s promises of economic aid. “China has not stopped trying to attract Honduras with financial incentives,” he told a news conference in Taipei. “The severance of diplomatic ties between our country and Honduras is a continuation of coercion and intimidation by China,” he added.

“China has been diminishing (Taiwan’s) place in the international arena for a long time, unilaterally threatening peace and stability in the region,” he added.

China and Taiwan

Honduras has recognized Taiwan’s independence and has maintained diplomatic relations with the country since the 1940s.

The communist authorities in Beijing recognize the democratically governed Taiwan as part of the territory of the PRC and seek to take control over it. They also strongly protest against any official contacts of other countries with Taiwan. Most Taiwanese are not interested in coming under Beijing’s rule.
