Snow blizzards are paralyzing traffic in China’s northeastern provinces. Electricity supplies to households are disrupted. Drivers are stuck on roads, schools and some airports are closed.
Heavy snowfall with strong winds occurred in Heilongjiang, Liaoning and Jilin provinces.
On Monday, more than 840,000 households were deprived of electricity in the area of the first province. However, the power supply was restored after a short break. All highways on which icing formed were closed.
To ensure continuity in the food supply, supplies from neighboring regions were brought into Heilongjiang Province. Similar actions, in case of worsening weather conditions, were taken in the city of Songyuan in Jilin province, where it rains heavily since Sunday. A special crisis management team has been established.
Closed airports and schools, drivers trapped on the roads
In Liaonign Province, Shenyang City, heavy snowfall has occurred continuously for 40 hours. The lanes are slippery and the inhabitants choose public transport. Shenyang-Taoxian International Airport was temporarily closed on Monday night. School classes were canceled throughout the city.
Nearly 100 trucks on Monday were stuck on national road 102 in the Hulado city area of Liaoning. The drivers were provided with hot water and instant noodles for the time of snow removal, during which the services will deal with the removal of the residual snow.
The snowstorm also hit the town of Tongliao in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Schools and kindergartens were also closed here. The airport there is closed, where the snow cover on the tarmac reached 43 centimeters and the visibility fell below 50 meters.
