Taiwan reports the largest-ever incursion by Chinese air forces into its air defense zone. 38 planes flying in two waves took part in it.
According to the Taiwanese authorities, the demonstration of force was related to the 72nd anniversary of the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in China. A military parade was held in Beijing on Friday.
According to the map provided by the Taiwan Ministry of Defense, the first batch of Chinese planes flew near Pratas Island, and two bombers flew closest to the atoll.
The second group flew to the Bashi Canal that separates Taiwan from the Philippines, the key waterway connecting the Pacific with the contested South China Sea.
Taiwan sent combat planes to warn Chinese planes, Taiwanese missile systems were launched to monitor them, the defense ministry said.
China previously spoke of a collusion between Taiwan and the US
China has yet to comment on its actions. Previously, they claimed that such flights were intended to protect the country’s sovereignty and counteract “collusion” between Taiwan and the United States, the island’s most important international sponsor.
The previous largest incursion took place in June, involving 28 Chinese Air Force planes.
According to Reuters, China has increased military and political pressure to try to force Taiwan to submit to Beijing. Taiwan claims to be an independent country and will defend its freedom and democracy.
