The People’s Republic of China supports the peaceful development of relations with Taiwan, but opposes the independence forces on the island, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Monday in a speech at the end of the parliamentary session. He also stressed the need to strengthen the Chinese armed forces.

The leader of the country Xi Jinpingwho began his third term as president of the People’s Republic of China on Friday, delivered a speech at the National People’s Congress on Monday.

Talking about Taiwanconsidered by Beijing to be its rebellious province, Xi declared that China they must oppose secessionist and pro-independence forces on this island and attempts at outside interference. He also announced that Beijing intends to “continue the process of reunification of the homeland.”

However, Xi opted for the “peaceful development of relations” between the two shores of the Taiwan Strait under the “one country, two systems” system.

Security “the foundation of development”

Xi stressed that China must ensure its security. “It is the foundation for further development and stability is a prerequisite for prosperity,” he declared at the end of the annual parliamentary session.

Therefore, he argued, China must modernize its armed forces to make it a “Great Wall of Steel.” He also postulated to gain greater self-sufficiency and potential in the field of science and technology.

The ruling Chinese Communist Party is expected to tighten its oversight of security matters after Xi replaced top security officials with trusted allies.
