The Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China is one of the symbols of the Middle Kingdom. This is actually a defense system – natural dams, forts and towers that protected the northern ones China before the invasion. The wall was also intended to protect the Chinese part of the Silk Road.

Its total length is officially 21,196 kilometers. The longest section is 8,851.8 km. It is the largest building of this type in the world. Contrary to popular belief, the wall is not visible to the naked eye from space, but can be seen from low Earth orbit.

In 1987, the Great Wall of China was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and in July 2007 it was recognized as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
