The number of marriages in China fell in 2022 to its lowest level since records began, Reuters reported, citing Chinese news site Yicai. The reason for the decrease is, among others, the introduction of strict restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to data published on the website of China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs, 6.83 million pairs were registered last year, down about 800,000 from 2021, Chinese news site Yicai reported.

The reason for the decline in the number of couples getting married is seen in the numerous restrictions on contact related to the pandemic – last year tens of millions of people were confined to their homes or housing estates. It was stressed that at the same time, the authorities are struggling with the decline in the birth rate and the decline in the population.

Population decline in China

In 2022, the population China fell for the first time in six decades. The decline marks the beginning of a long period of population decline with serious implications for the economy and the world, Reuters reported.

To encourage marriage and improve the country’s birth rate, China said last month it would launch pilot projects in more than 20 cities to create a “new era” of marriage and childbearing culture.

Some provinces are also offering newlyweds extended paid marital leave.
