Jake Sullivan, the US national security adviser, said the White House hopes that China’s leader Xi Jinping will hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky soon. “We hope it happens because it would potentially bring more balance and perspective to the way the People’s Republic of China is approaching this war,” he said.

Jake Sullivan he was referring to reports in the Wall Street Journal that Xi would call Zelensky after an expected visit to Moscow next week.

An aide to President Biden said he spoke with his Ukrainian counterpart on Monday about the matter, who could not confirm that such a conversation would take place. However, he added that he hoped Xi would hold talks with Zelensky.

“We’ve been encouraging Beijing to make such a merger … we hope it happens because it would potentially give more balance and perspective to the way the People’s Republic of China is approaching this war.” And we hope that would dissuade them from their decision to deliver lethal aid to Russia,” Sullivan said during a press briefing aboard Air Force One.

Sullivan: Russia is trying to drag other countries into this conflict

A White House official said there was no information so far China decided to send Russia weapons. Asked whether Xi’s visit to Moscow would be an opportunity to make such a decision, Sullivan assessed that it would not serve Beijing’s interests.

– Russia is trying to drag other countries into this conflict, but our position is the same. Whether or not they meet, from our perspective, it would not be in China’s interest to supply Russia with weapons for use on the battlefield in Ukraine. But this is a sovereign decision that China must make itself, Sullivan said. Previously, Washington officials had repeatedly warned Beijing that sending weapons to Russia would have “serious consequences.”

President Joe Biden will attend a meeting in San Diego, California, with the British and Prime Ministers on Wednesday Australia under a tripartite agreement between these countries – AUKUS. The meeting will announce new plans to speed up Australia’s equipping of nuclear-powered submarines. According to reports, the US and Great Britain will station their ships in Australia, Australia will buy American Virginia-class ships, and finally, at the turn of the 1930s and 1940s, it will produce its own ships in cooperation with both countries.

Sullivan assured that AUKUS is not directed against China and added that he repeats this message in every contact with representatives of the People’s Republic of China.
