Christmas Eve in 2023 falls on a trading Sunday. The Polish Trade and Distribution Organization (POHiD) and the Consumer Federation are calling for a change of the date of the commercial Sunday. Earlier, the Minister of Development and Technology, Waldemar Buda, announced that Christmas Eve would be closed for the first time this year.

In 2023 – as in 2022 – there are seven trading Sundays. The trade ban has so far not been in force on the last Sundays of January, April and June, as well as the Sunday before Easter. In addition, this year, the trade ban is not to apply on the last Sunday in August and two consecutive Sundays preceding Christmas (maximum 2:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve).

The Polish Trade and Distribution Organization and the Consumer Federation are calling for the change of the date of the commercial Sunday in December. The appeal was signed by Renata Juszkiewicz, President of the Management Board of POHiD, and Monika Kosińska-Pyter, President of the Consumer Federation. The organizations are demanding that the trading Sunday be moved from December 24 to December 10 or December 31 this year.

Christmas Eve 2023 – Sunday trading ban

“Replacing the commercial Sunday of December 24 would meet the expectations of trade employees who could celebrate Christmas Eve according to tradition, fully using it for pre-Christmas cleaning and preparation of the Christmas Eve supper” – we read. It was emphasized that such a solution would also be consistent with the position represented by NSZZ “Solidarity“, “who repeatedly raised the issue of shop hours on Christmas Eve”.

According to POHiD and the Consumer Federation, moving the shopping Sunday would also be a response to consumer expectations, especially in such an important holiday period. “Taking into account the convenience of consumers and the comfort of trade employees, the industry would like to draw attention to the fact that the commercial Sunday of December 10 would allow to spread the traffic in stores, which would otherwise be accumulated in the two weeks before Christmas, resulting in the dissatisfaction of customers waiting in long queues to the cash registers as well as overloading employees.

Additionally, in the appeal it was noted that the industry is concerned about the progressing erosion of consumers’ purchasing power. It was cited data from the Central Statistical Office from April this year, when retail sales fell by 7.3 percent. Every year. In May, a year-on-year decline of 6.8 percent was recorded.

Maintaining two trading Sundays in December, which is traditionally the ‘hottest’ period in trade, would improve retailers’ financial results and, indirectly, increase state budget revenues, the organizations stressed.

Minister’s announcement

The Minister of Development and Technology, Waldemar Buda, announced in mid-June that Christmas Eve would be closed for the first time this year, although it falls on a commercial Sunday.

– I can say with certainty that Christmas Eve will not be working for the first time this year. It falls on a Sunday, including a commercial one, but we will change it this year. Poles deserve a free Christmas Eve – said the head of the development ministry.
