A man from the Ciechanów district fell victim to online fraudsters for the second time. A few months ago he lost a thousand zlotys. Now he got an offer to get his money back and fell into another trap. This time he lost PLN 50,000.
A resident of Ciechanów County invested in Internet shares a few months ago. He found an advertisement regarding the possibility of quick profit on one of the social networking sites. He then deposited PLN 1,000 and installed a remote desktop application on his phone.
The “financial advisor” who contacted the man by phone tried to persuade him to invest more money.
“When the man refused, he received information that the funds paid so far would not be returned to him,” the Asp. described in the statement. Magda Sakowska from the police in Ciechanów.
She was supposed to help, but she cheated
A few days ago, the reporting person received a call from a woman with a “characteristic Eastern accent” who offered her help in recovering the invested money. The interlocutor convinced the man that for this purpose it would be necessary for him to log in to his bank account.
The man followed the instructions. “As a result, it turned out that the fraudsters, thanks to the previously installed application for remote operation of the injured party's phone, gained access to the injured party's bank account and withdrew PLN 50,000 from his account,” Sakowska said.
How not to be deceived?
The police appealed for common sense and vigilance during all financial operations. “We recommend special caution when investing funds via online stock exchanges, cryptocurrency markets or when purchasing shares of various companies via unverified websites,” the officers emphasized.
They also warned against installing programs that fraudsters use to take control of our mobile devices. “You should also not share your electronic and mobile banking login details with anyone or provide confidential information regarding payment cards.”
They stressed not to be fooled by the idea that you can get rich quickly. “There is no quick profit,” they warned.
