The new ranking showed the cities where it is easiest to be in a good mood. The greatest injection of dopamine, called the happiness hormone, is supposed to be provided by a trip to Split. The Croatian city was distinguished for its sunny weather, good air quality, solid catering facilities and many places for walking.
The ranking of cities that most improve mood – stimulating the release of dopamine – was created on the initiative of Scenic Cruises. The list was developed in cooperation with clinical psychologist Dr. Gurpreet Kaur.
The criteria taken into account included the amount of sunshine, air quality, the size of green areas, the availability of walking routes and the quality of local cuisine.
These cities are supposed to bring the most happiness
– Sun exposure naturally increases dopamine levels, while high-quality cuisine offers essential nutrients and pleasure. In turn, walking helps reduce cortisol levels, and air quality improves brain functioning, Dr. Kaur said in a statement quoted by the Daily Express.
She added: 'Research has also shown that being surrounded by greenery encourages mindfulness, which helps increase dopamine levels. Together, these elements create places that improve your mood.
Split tops the list
The place that performed best in the ranking, which also means that it can boast a high index in each of the mentioned categories, is Split. It is the largest city on the Croatian Adriatic coast.
A city in the heart of which is Diocletian's Palace – an imperial residence from Roman times. On average there are 2,631 sunny hours per year. The green oasis of Split is Marjan Park, located on a hill, covered with a pine forest, from where there is a wonderful view of the city.
Amsterdam took second place on the list (Netherlands). The capital was also on the podium Estonia – Tallinn. Next came New Orleans (USA), Lisbon (Portugal), Cadiz (Spain), Malaga (Spain), Liverpool (Great Britain), Vancouver (Canada) and Oslo (Norway).
