– We have plans in the event of US and President Donald Trump's duties – emphasized Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum. Washington announced that the duties are to be introduced on Tuesday.
At the morning press conference, Sheinbaum also said that from the inauguration of Trump's presidency on January 20 Mexico adopted nearly 20,000 deported people with USAincluding over 15,000 Mexicans and over 4,000 third -country citizens, mainly Hondurasu, Guatemala and Salvador – said the daily La Cronica de Hoy.
Trump's duties and Mexico's plans
The president also assessed that Mexico presented sufficient arguments for the US leader to give up the announced duties on goods imported from her country. She admitted, however, that “everything is possible”, so you should be patient and a clean mind.
– This decision depends on the US government, on their president. Whatever this decision, we will make our own (…) We are calm – she added, assuring that the Mexico government has prepared “Plan A, Plan B, Plan C and Plan D” in the event of the introduction of duties.
Announcement of the imposition of customs duties on Mexico
Trump initially announced the imposition of 25 % duties on all goods imported from Mexico in February as well as from Canadaaccusing these countries of not enough effective fight against drug smuggling and illegal migration to the USA. However, he suspended the introduction of these duties for a month in exchange for a commitment to strengthen the protection of borders.
Last week, Mexican officials visited Washington, where they negotiated with representatives of US administration on trade and security. On Sunday, US minister Howard Lutnick said that Trump has not yet determined the height of duties and “considers how to do exactly with Mexico and Canada” and “the situation is fluid”.
