Climate change. NASA does not claim that there is no global warming. We explain

An Internet user argues that, according to the US space agency, there is no global warming. The evidence is supposed to be temperature measurements from the last eight years. It’s a false message.

“NASA states that there is no question of any global warming – the last 8 years and 5 months clearly show that there is no sign of this trend” – announced one Twitter user on February 5 (original spelling of all entries). She retweeted Steve Milloy, a global warming skeptic from the United States. Milloy has published a graph of global temperature changes from September 2014 to January 2023 taken from the studies of the University of Alabama in Huntsville in the USA. A slightly sloping blue line is traced across the graph, which shows that the temperature has decreased during the indicated period. “It’s official: No global warming for 8 years and 5 months, according to NASA satellite data. No warming despite approximately 475 billion tons of CO2 emissions. CO2 warming is the greatest scientific hoax of all time,” Milloy wrote.

Milloy’s tweet had nearly 10 million views and 75,000 likes. likes, the tweet of the Polish woman quoted above nearly 91 thousand. views and almost 300 likes. “So what are we going back to the ozone hole”; “Whew, how good. What would we do if the left was right? You would have to stubbornly lie that they don’t”; “That’s why eco-idiots now don’t say ‘warming’ but ‘climate change’,” commented Internet users.

However, many participants in the discussion accused the Internet user of repeating the untruth. “You can’t even lie” – commented Jakub Wiech, deputy editor-in-chief of the Energetyka24 website and published the headline of the NASA message, according to which 2022 was the fifth warmest year in the history of measurements. At the same time, NASA reported that the warming trend is still ongoing. The manipulation of the chart consists in selecting only a slice of data from the last eight years. Climate change experts have no doubt that global warming is progressing.

Expert: “Fixation on short-term fluctuations”

This is not the first time Steve Milloy has published fragmentary data on temperatures and, based on them, tries to prove that there is no global warming. January 13 published on Twitter a chart of land and ocean temperatures in the years 2015-2022 constructed on the basis of data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Service, a US government agency. He also argued that these data allow us to conclude that in recent years there has been a “global cooling” and “warming caused by CO2 is a fraud.”

Milloy’s tweet was responded to by physicist Dr. Robert Rohde of Berkeley Earth, an American non-profit organization that analyzes environmental data. “Ah yes, a reliable fixation on short-term fluctuations, not on the long-term trend,” Rohde commented and released an animation (gif file) with a graph of temperature changes from 1975 to 2023.

The chart shows periods of several years when the average temperature was lower. However, taking into account the entire period since 1975, there are clear increases in temperatures. “Year-to-year fluctuations are a normal part of the ongoing global warming trend. Don’t be fooled by this hype,” commented Rohde.

Progressive climate warming

NASA consistently informs about the progressing global warming. January 12 the agency reportedthat in 2022 the average surface temperature of the Earth was the fifth warmest on record (together with the one recorded in 2015). “Continuing the planet’s long-term warming trend, global temperatures in 2022 were 1.6 degrees Fahrenheit (0.89 degrees Celsius) above the average for the NASA base period (1951-1980),” reported scientists at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York.

“This year’s January turned out to be above average warm and rather ‘spring’ or ‘autumn’, with winter episodes” – TVN Meteo reported on January 31. Climate scientists fear that this is a foretaste of the next records after last year, full of “dynamics in the climate system” and intense heat waves. Experts from the Earth observation program – Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) – determined that 2022 should be counted among the warmest on record. In the case of our continent, it was ranked second, in the world it took fifth place. There was no shortage of extreme weather phenomena caused by exacerbating climate change.

Referring to these data, climatologist Dr. Michał Marosz from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management of the National Research Institute emphasized that the summer of 2022 in Europe was the warmest in the last 70 years, we also had a very warm autumn, it was the third in the ranking.
