Born in New York City, the son of Jamaican immigrants, Powell became, during his career, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the term of President George Bush Sr., and the US Secretary of State during the first term of President George W. Bush. He was also a national security advisor in the administration of President Ronald Reagan.

Powell served in the military for 35 years, including two shifts during the Vietnam War, where he was awarded the Soldier’s Medal for saving three soldiers from a burning helicopter. He also played a key role during the First Gulf War. He was then considered the author of the so-called the “Powell Doctrine” emphasizing the need for overwhelming force, public support and clear goals in military intervention.

As head of diplomacy, Powell was one of the biggest skeptics of the Iraq war, but nonetheless presented “evidence” to the UN Security Council for weapons of mass destruction purportedly concealed by the Saddam Hussein regime. In later years, he described it as his biggest mistake and a stain on his achievements.

Despite belonging to the Republican Party, he has recently been a strong critic of the party and the presidency of Donald Trump. In recent years, he has been focusing on the foundation he has established, devoted to the problems of children’s education.
