Collections for flood victims – what to watch out for?
On the website of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration, zbiorki.gov.pl, you can register your collection. People who want to donate in-kind or financial resources can check whether the collection is verified.
In turn, on the website of the National Institute of Freedom (NIW) you can check non-governmental organizations that are involved in helping those most in need.
NIW has published five principles for responsible crisis response:
1. Check the legality of the collection. Make sure that the financial collection is registered on the portal zbiorki.gov.pl.
2. Help according to need. Before you donate, check what is actually needed. Collecting the wrong things can cause chaos and hinder the work of services.
3. Work with experienced organizations and local government. Trust experienced organizations that know how to best allocate funds.
4. Verify the integrity of the organizers. Check the credibility of the organizer and their previous actions. This will help avoid fraud and ensure that your support goes where it needs to.
5. Coordinate actions. Avoid ill-considered actions, cooperate with organizations and authorities. This will ensure the effectiveness of aid.
NIW recommends special caution when supporting collections set up by individuals on popular collection portals. In the case of a collection set up by an individual for the purpose of a needy non-governmental organization or local government, it should be ensured that it is set up on behalf of the needy.
