Heavy rain hit Colorado on Friday. Rivers burst their banks, washing away roads and damaging bridges – that’s what happened in El Paso County. In the city of Aurora, a car was swept away by water and firefighters had trouble reaching the trapped passengers. The floods also caused power outages.

Colorado was hit on Friday storms. The Boulder branch of the National Weather Service (NWS) issued weather warnings for counties in the east and northeast of the region. Colorado’s capital, Denver, was also on alert.

Destruction in the path of the element

The storms brought downpours, hail and strong gusts of wind, which caused serious damage. In El Paso County, a bridge over the Black Squirrel Creek River was undermined – a fragment of the road surface collapsed completely, making it impossible to move in both directions. The security services appealed to the residents to stay at home as far as possible, and to be careful on the way and not to drive through flood waters.

Downpours also hit the city of Aurora. The swollen waters of Box Elder Creek swept the car with it. As firefighters reported, coordinating the rescue operation was quite a challenge – the water flowed very quickly, so firefighters had to ask for help from colleagues in the city of Bennett. There were two people in the vehicle who were rescued.

NWS forecasters suspect a tornado has hit Douglas County. Local security services have asked residents to send photos of damage with their location – this will help in assessing the severity of the phenomenon and determining its exact route.

According to local media, the storm lasted more than four hours in the town of Sterling, with 15 centimeters of water covering roads in places. The rain caused flooding both in the streets and in the surrounding fields. As a result of the storm, part of the office building collapsed, and there were power outages in the area.
