Nearly 3,500 shark fins have been captured at the airport in the capital of Colombia. According to the Bogota authorities, this means that between 900 and 1,000 protected animals have been killed. The parcel was to be delivered to Hong Kong.
Authorities seized 3,493 shark fins on Thursday. The 10 fin-filled packages came from the city of Roldanillo in western Colombia, it said. They were supposed to go to Hong Kong.
According to the city authorities, this means that between 900 and 1,000 protected sharks, ranging from one meter to five meters in length, were killed. Bogotá government representative responsible for environmental policy, Carolina Urrutia, said it has caused “irreversible damage to Colombia’s aquatic ecosystem.”
– Of course, this raises huge opposition. It is probably the result of illegal fishing, and the unusually high number of (caught) sharks has made us very concerned, ‘Urrutia added.
There is a total ban on the sale or processing of shark meat in Colombia. However, their fins, like the rhinoceros horn, are in great demand in many Asian countries, especially in China, because they are believed to have medicinal properties.
Import and export of representatives of missing species of animals without special permission in Hong Kong may be punished with a penalty of up to 10 years in prison, which does not change the fact that this is where the smuggling route runs, through which both animals and protected tree species go to Asia – writes EFE.
