Colombia will be the third Latin American country after Bolivia and Belize to break off diplomatic relations with Israel. This will happen on Thursday, announced Colombian President Gustavo Petro.

– Here, before you (…) the president of the republic announces that tomorrow (Thursday – ed.) diplomatic relations with Israel will be severed because it has a genocidal government – Petro said, speaking to a crowd of supporters gathered in Bogota on the occasion of Labor Day.

– The times of genocide, the extermination of an entire nation before our eyes and with our passivity, cannot return. If Palestine dies, humanity will die too. We will not let her die and we will not let humanity die, he added.

Colombia's leftist president has repeatedly sharply criticized the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for its military operations in the Gaza Strip, which began in October in response to a brutal terrorist attack by Palestinian Hamas.

Petro announced, among others: joining the complaint brought by South Africa before the International Court of Justice, accusing Israel of genocide. In March, he threatened to break off diplomatic relations with Israel if it did not comply with a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Colombia will become the third Latin American country to cut ties with Israel since it launched an offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. At the end of October, the authorities of Bolivia decided to take such a step, and in November a similar decision was announced by the authorities of Belize.
