Two shipwrecks have been discovered off the coast of Colombia. One is a ship from the times of the Spanish Empire, the other is a schooner that comes from the South American War of Independence in the 19th century. The wreckage of the San José galleon has already been found in the same area and is regularly monitored. The authorities want to pick up all the ships and put them and their loads in the museum.

The Colombian Navy, which monitors the sunken Spanish galleon San José, has discovered two other historic wrecks in its vicinity, the country’s president Iván Duque Márquez said on Monday.

Wrecks on the seabed

San José was a 64-gun, three-masted galleon of the Spanish Navy. It sank in 1708 in a battle off the Colombian coast of Cartagena. According to historians, there were gold, silver and emeralds worth billions of today’s dollars on board.

Underwater treasures

As President Duque said during a joint conference with representatives of the navy, new photos of San José were obtained thanks to a remote-controlled vehicle that plunged to a depth of 900 meters. In addition, two other wrecks were discovered nearby – a ship from the times of the Spanish Empire and a schooner from the period of the South American War of Independence in the 19th century.

“We now have two other discoveries in the same area that indicate different opportunities for archaeological exploration,” said Admiral Gabriel Perez, commander of the Colombian navy. “So the work is just beginning,” he added.

New pictures of the treasure

The vehicle captured the best photos of the treasure aboard San José so far – including gold bars and coins, as well as cannons made in Seville in 1655, and an intact Chinese dinner service.

Colombian authorities want to pick up the ships and put them in a museum.
