Companies – what employee competencies are sought? Report

In the coming years, Polish companies will have to deal with the growing lack of necessary competences among employees – assess the authors of the report “Employment Trends 2021” of the Polish HR Forum. They add that the main reasons for the growing problems with competency deficits will be the development of technology and process automation.

New jobs are being created, the existing ones are redefined, and in addition, pessimistic demographic scenarios forecast a significant decline in the number of people of working age in the coming years, the report reads. Meanwhile – as indicated by the Polish HR Forum – the demand for job candidates is growing, the number of job offers published in October was 35 percent. higher than in 2020 and by 6% higher than before the pandemic.

Problems with competencies

The report estimates that, on the one hand, employers are aware of problems with recruiting employees for work, as evidenced by the lack of significant layoffs during the pandemic, but on the other hand, they do not take actions that would ensure their access to appropriate competences in the future. Only 21 percent. small and medium-sized enterprises and 29 percent. large enterprises participating in the survey diagnosed what competences they will need in the next 2 years.

The research for the report shows that 30 percent. large companies surveyed will be looking for competences in the area of ​​IT and machine operation skills, 25 percent – technical and engineering, and 22 percent. – financial. Medium and small companies will mainly be looking for sales and marketing competences as well as IT / digital. Interestingly – as noted in the report – despite the new challenges in the field of management brought about by the pandemic, managerial skills are at the end of the list of competences most sought in the future, indicated by only 10 percent. respondents.

Competency shortages in companies

Over the last year, every third company surveyed experienced competence shortages in their organizations. They were particularly severe in the sector classified as “other industry”, where they affected 47% of the employers and in the automotive industry – 41 percent Employers from the central region of Poland faced the greatest challenges in acquiring appropriate competences, problems in this area were reported by half of them.

In the analyzed period, it was the most difficult for employers to acquire sales and marketing competences – which was indicated by 22 percent. respondents, technical and engineering – 18 percent indications and IT / Digital – 17 percent In addition, 38 percent. surveyed employers from the other industry sector had difficulties in acquiring technical and engineering competences, and 25 percent – with machine operation skills. In the automotive industry sector, it was 34% and 26%, respectively.

According to the participants of the study “Trends in employment 2021”, in the next two years, the need to change competences will apply to 11 percent. people employed in production positions and 19 percent. in non-production positions. 31 percent production workers in the food sector and 28 percent. other industry will require a change of competency in the next two years. In non-production positions, these changes are to affect 37 percent. employees in the financial services sector, 33 percent in transport and logistics and 30 percent. employed in business services.

Filling the gaps

64 percent survey participants indicated training as the main method of supplementing competency gaps in their companies. 24 percent business enterprises will be looking for solutions in the field of process and service outsourcing. 9 percent companies, mainly transport and logistics, the food industry and the automotive industry, plan to use temporary work.

– The lack of systemic solutions that facilitate the cooperation of the private sector with industry schools or higher education is a huge obstacle in creating a sustainable labor market. We need modern curricula adapted to the ongoing technological changes and a practical approach to the transferred knowledge. It is also necessary for employers to become more involved in shaping the educational system in Poland, believes Wojciech Ratajczyk, member of the Management Board of the Polish HR Forum.
